DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY
The Cave-Ins
"Know That You Will" b/w "Railway Winters" (Omnibus Records /
Visalian
Records)
Don't get The Cave-Ins confused with the band Cave In. They're nothing
similar, possibly even polar opposites. The Cave-Ins have three songs here
that evoke the feeling of the 60's pop songs slowed down. They bring a retro
feel to the slow-core sound of bands like Low or Hayden, only a more
orchestrated, deeper feel, adding some keyboards and echoed vocals into the
mix. Perhaps a good comparison would be The Beach Boys on downers, as scary
as that sounds.
"Know that You Will" kicks off very slow and moody, a very
echoed, feel, but
the song evolves, picking up the pace a bit and getting more poppy while the
atmosphere develops into something of a melancholy pop song. When the soft
"ahh-ahh" backing vocals roll over Luke Top's singing "be my, be my baby, my
one and only baby," you can't help but swoon. Think slower Beatles ballads
combining with Low for the best comparison here. "Buildings and Flags" is
much slower and moodier, with a bit of a 60's soulful feel throughout. The
vocals get a little too echoed and moody, in my opinion, sounding a bit
muddled by the end, but they don't lose that melancholy crooning effect that
is so sweetly sad. This whole song makes me sad, actually.
"Railway Winters"
brings up the B-side, and this is probably my favorite song
here. The vocals are lighter, with a neat overlapping effect. This song is
probably the most orchestrated, still slow and deliberate but often very
lofty and loud. The guitars are played with such sweet softness, and the
vocals are so good. This one has a much more modern feel than the A-side as
well, although those 60's pop sensibilities are still at play here. This is
a lovely and lofty song.
Oh, The Cave-Ins are nice. Sweet yet moody slow-core
pop songs that revive
the 60;s feel, these songs are played with great depth of feeling. Fans of
Low and 60's popsters alike will enjoy this band. These songs are played so
softly and deliberate, it's quite possible to lose yourself for a few
minutes, close your eyes, sway along, and just smile. Not recommended to do
this while driving. -Jeff
